My work is revolved around the juxtaposition of historical and contemporary themes. By combining these, my work includes a range of different photographing techniques, such as digital, digital negatives and the printed out traditional process of Salt Printing. I combine these techniques with the use of portraiture, exploring subjects with both modern aspects and traditional hints within the compositions.
The process of salt printing intrigued me when learning the origins, the fascination of using something from the beginning of photography in a modern way, which many people have no or little experience in. The process involves time, skill and dedication to master the technique, with still little direction to how the print will look. Its an unpredictable procedure, which directly linked me to using portraiture. The uncertainty forms a relationship that has become the essence of why I feel obliged to use both genres to work in.
My previous two projects have had direct links to using salt printing and portraiture together. The first body of work that was producing in Salt Print was revolved around combining the technical process of ‘Digital Negative Salt Prints’, with the subject matter by photographing young adults in traditional positions. My more recent body of work was locating other individuals like myself who work in traditional crafts and processes. Both series have enabled me to explore both portraiture in a broad variety and Salt Printing which has become my self exploration.
